Admissions at Acacia 

If you are a prospective parent coming to Kampala or just checking out schools in your neighborhood, a very warm welcome to you.  This page has most of the information you will need for admissions, some frequently asked questions and the application forms.  


Acacia is selective in its admissions and the Admission Committees decisions are based on the criteria listed below.  Short-listed students will be asked to take the admission test before a final decision is made.  No preference is given for early applications and the school does not maintain a long term waiting list.


Criteria for admissions 

Acacia aims to be an open and welcoming Christian international school, and views each child as a unique person made in God's image. In our admissions and school operations we do not discriminate on the basis of national or ethnic origin, religion or faith background, gender, age, race, color or disability.  Our teachers, however, are Christians. 

All admissions decisions are made by an Admissions Committee.  The criteria have been set by the school board and include the following priorities.

  • We prioritize families that are likely to support learning from home and participate in the life of the school. Each family writes a 'parent essay' as part of admissions process.
  • We prioritize students who are likely to benefit from, and contribute to, an academically rich and rigorous environment.  The admission test and interview is weighed along with report cards from previous schools. 
  • We prioritize siblings to try to keep families together.

Admission Steps

A complete application includes:


An Admissions test.  Short-listed applicants take an English and Math admissions test. This costs $50 and this fee is payable before the assessment.  

English language learners in Six to Twelfth Grades are required to take the Duolingo English Test which combines an English proficiency test with a brief video interview.  This an external online test and costs an additional $49. 

An Admissions decision.  The Admissions Committee will consider completed applications and after making a decision they will communicate to parents within two weeks and usually sooner.  For the August intake, completed applications are due in March, admission decisions are made in April. Mid-year applications are considered when they are submitted.

Confirmation. After receiving a letter of admission, parents need to pay the Admissions Fee within two weeks to reserve a space.


Application deadline

For the August intake, completed applications are due by the 31st of March.  Short-listed students will take an admissions test during the first two weeks in April.  The Admissions Committee will make a decision by the end of April.

For mid-year transfers, the Admissions Committee will usually meet and review completed applications within two weeks. 

The school does not maintain a long-term waiting list or hold applications from one admissions period to the next. If your application is unsuccessful and you wish to apply for admission for the following school year, you are welcome to submit a new application in March the following year.

2022-2023 Fees  Fee range per year $5,000-$10,000.

Diplomatic Fees 2022-2023 This applies to children whose tuition is paid by an embassy or foreign government including affiliated development organizations or UN Agencies (UNDP, UNHCR, UNICEF, etc).

A few frequently asked questions....


Do you have vacancies?  

Many of our classes are full but we have some spaces for the new academic year beginning in August.

What size are your classes?

We have a "soft cap" at 22 but under certain circumstances we will increase up to 24 in consultation with the homeroom teacher.

Which grade will my child be in?

Children are almost always placed with their age group with a September 1st cut off date.  We use the American naming system, so "Grade One" students are six-years-old and turn seven in the course of the year.  Grade One is equivalent to Year Two in the U.K. and Primary Two in Uganda.  More information is available here.

Do you admit and can you support children with special needs?

Acacia provides limited support to students with mild special educational needs.  During the application for admissions, children with identified special learning needs are considered on a case-by-case basis.  

Special Needs students will initially be enrolled on a probationary basis.  Each child will undergo an independent assessment by a recommended special needs consultant. The parents will be billed for the cost of this consultation. The child’s progress and the school’s capacity to adequately provide for the child’s needs will be re-evaluated annually.

Can a student enroll mid-year?  

Yes.  Where we have space, we welcome new students in the middle of the year.

Do you have boarding facilities?

Unfortunately, no. 

Do you have a bus service?  

No, however there are independent bus companies that offer services to some of our students and some of our parents carpool.

What clubs do you offer?  

We have a range of after-school clubs available for children in kindergarten and older which run from 3 to 4pm.  Clubs include: swimming, soccer, touch-rugby, ballet, art-n-crafts, cooking, taekwondo, sewing and yearbook.  We are always looking for fun clubs to add.  See the PARENT page of the website for more details. 

Do you offer swimming?

Students swim once per week at the BSK pool. Confident swimmers are encouraged to join the swimming club and compete with other international schools.

Do you offer secondary school?

Yes! We have grown the school gradually since we opened in 2012 with our top class, Grade 12, graduating from Acacia in June 2019.  You can read more about our vision for growing the school over the next years on the Master Plan Summary.

What kind of financial help do you offer?  

You can save money on tuition by paying annually.  We also offer a 30% third child discount.  We have a limited bursary program available for gifted students enrolling in 9th and 10th grade, for families with financial needs.

How would you describe faith at Acacia?  

We are enthusiastic followers of Jesus.  Our faith shapes who we are and what we do.  We are not affiliated with any denomination or church and our Board of Directors and staff worship at a variety of churches around the city. Please read the school's statement of faith here. We hire teachers who love Christ and we expect our students to attend chapel and participate in bible lessons.  We approach learning from a biblical worldview beginning with the idea that all children are created in God's image.  We welcome families and children from other faith backgrounds.
